Team GB

News about the Team GB - not the Olympic team, but the F1 Stock Car Racing team heading to New Zealand to take on the mighty Kiwis.  The following drivers will be going, so we will be cheering them on and clapping until our little paws are sore - Frankie Wainman Junior (our hero), Mat Newson, Tom Harris, Mick Harris, Mark Taylor and Danny Wainman.

Good luck guys, and paws crossed you come back with some silver :-)

New Wainman racewear!

Check out the Wainman Racing gear at the Wainman Racing website (http://wainmanracing.com/news/announcing-our-new-range-of-clothing/) - it's seriously cool racewear.  Bev had ordered a FWJ hoodie, and Paul has ordered a Danny Wainman Fleece and a Keep Calm and Carry On t-shirt.  Photographs to follow when the order arrives.......

Superb Result!

Frankie has been racing really well recently, and won the Brisca F1 Stock Car Grand National Championship at Coventry on Saturday night.  Way to go, Frankie - we bears are glad to see you've got your mojo back!   Now you just need to get that silver roof back.....

World Final Weekend - the good, the bad and the ugly!

Northampton International Raceway hosted the Brisca F1 World Final on Saturday 10th September and the World Masters on Sunday 11th September.  Below is a synopsis of that action-packed weekend from Hamish MacBear, your very own cub reporter and Frankie Wainman Junior fan.
Ok, the racing over both days was of a very high standard - fast, furious, testosterone-fuelled and highly entertaining.
The good - well, apart from the excellent racing, it had to be Paul Harrison winning the World Final on his 23rd attempt!  Give that man a star for perseverance!
The bad - Frankie, having lead for most of the race, was knocked out by Dan Johnson!  On a brighter note, Dan came in 2nd, and is definitely a driver to watch in the future.
The downright ugly - Andy Smith put the boot in (metaphorically) by ramming Frankie's already damaged car into the fence.  In another episode, Stuart Smith Junior was very heavy-handed with Lee Robinson!

Two great days of racing, the weather stayed fine, and Bev & Paul enjoyed some scrummy cider.  The stadium has a really good disabled area where you can sit and watch the racing.  Well done to Northampton Stadium for providing this much-needed facility.  Tony will be round to kick the able-bodied couple who sat in the disabled area to get a better view, depriving some genuinely disabled people from getting a space!

Racing at Birmingham at the weekend - Blimey!

Saturday night at Birmingham on 27th of August was another wonderful evening's racing - the young guns were out in  a shit or bust mood, with lots of testosterone-fuelled aggression just weeks before the World Final!  What a great night's racing from the Ministox, the F2s and F1s!  Well done to all who raced for providing such entertainment, and well done to Paul Hines for winning the 2nd Semi-Final at Belle Vue on Monday 29th of August!

F! Stock Car Semi-Final at Skegness

Last weekend we went to the first F1 Stock Car Semi-Final at Skegness, and were treated to some spectacular racing - this was much more exciting than the Euro Championship!  The Semi itself was fast and furious, with Frankie in the lead for most of the way, though he was finally overtaken by Paul Harrison and came in second!  Well done, Frankie!  He will be on the 2nd row at the world final in September.  Apparently, his front bumper got seriously damaged during an early altercation, and Frankie said he couldn't risk using it to push Paul Harrison out of the way.  When we went to see  the car in the pits, they were cutting bits out of the bumper and welding it together again!
The Final race of the evening was one of the best races I have seen in ages - they were racing very fast and hard, with lots of cars sustaining serious damage.  At the last bend, about 7 cars tried to come round the corner together, one got spun out and someone just drove over his car to cross the finish-line!  Richard, the commentator, just said "Blimey!" after the race - he was as gobsmacked as we were.
Frankie came in a very creditable 4th in that race, which was won by Stuart Smith Junior.
Great weekend, lots of sunshine, spectacular racing and scrummy cider!

Wainman Racing website finally up and running

You know what fans we are of the Wainman Racing team (Frankie Senior, Frankie Junior, Daniel, Frankie JJ and Phoebe).  Well, their website is finally up and running.  Was it worth waiting for?  Does the Pope poo in the woods?  Of course it was worth waiting for - it's fab and it's at wainmanracing.com.

Racing at Northampton - poor, poor Frankie

We bears, Bev and Paul went to the F1 and F2 Stock Car racing at Northampton last weekend, and what a joy that was - only a small number of die-hard fans and drivers turned up, but it was a great evening full of rufty-tufty racing.

We arrived in time to watch the drivers practising, but when Frankie pulled-off his engine made a strange noise.  Paul rushed round to the pits to discovered that Frankie had his engine in pieces - he was looking for the foreign object that was making the horrible grinding noise, and checking to see what damage had been done and could be fixed!  Poor Frankie eventually loaded his car onto the transporter without entering any of the heats.  Daniel raced and did quite well, but it was a sad night for Bev who had been looking forward to seeing Frankie race.

We bears did try to help Frankie, but I think all we succeeded in doing was getting a lot of fur in the engine - our big furry paws mean we are useless as mechanics!  Perhaps we should offer our services to the Smiths and then block up their engines with all our fur!  Even Kitty could help.

Frankie is having a terrible year - Bev has been watching him race since 1999 and she has never known him to have so many problems.  Never mind Frankie, we know you're the best!

Motor racing at Birmingham - great night!

As Saturday evening was going to be warm and sunny, we bundled Bev and Paul in the car and told them to drive to Birmingham so that we could watch the racing.  We haven't been to much racing at all this year - Paul has been flag marshalling 4 or 5 times at Coventry, but Bev hasn't been to a single meeting yet because it has been SO cold!

Anyway, we took the car into the track and sat on the tailgate in the sunshine - it was bliss!  We watched 3 formulas - F1 Stock cars, grass track cars and bangers.  The racing from all 3 formulas was fast and furious, resulting in an excellent evening's entertainment.

Poor Frankie struggled the whole evening - apparently the engine in his transporter has given up the ghost, so he has had to borrow Ivan Pritchard's until he can fix it.  With all his time and money being spent on fixing the transporter engine, he hasn't had time to finish building his new shale car, so is racing his tarmac car on both surfaces without much success.  So, a great night's racing in the sunshine, but an absolutely average evening for both Frankie and Daniel.  We hope Frankie can get his engine fixed and his new shale car ready for the World Final at Coventry in September.  Way to go, Frankie - we know you can do it!

Paul the OAP!

Well, what fun Bev and us bears had on Sunday morning.  We had our breakfast at Coventry, then drove up to Cannock.  When we got to the stadium, we wanted to park inside so that Bev didn't have to walk too far on her dodgy knee.  But when Paul asked about a parking space inside the stadium, the young lad asked his age and said if he was an OAP he could get in cheaper!  Well, we all fell about laughing at the thought of Paul as an OAP - we know he's a bit wrinkly and could do with a good iron, but he's no OAP :-)  That amused Bev and us bears all afternoon!

Poor, poor Frankie

Well, despite his best efforts and the amazing efforts of the 515 / 212 team last weekend, Frankie came 3rd in the National Series Championship and loses his silver roof to Stuart Smith Junior. Congratulations to Stuart and commiserations to Frankie.  Frankie blew his engine on Saturday night so the Wainman team took the engine out of Danny's car and put it into Frankie's car in an hour! Talk about dedication - most other drivers would have given up in disgust, loaded up their car and driven home, but not the Wainmans!  Apparently there were cheers in the pits when the engine fired up.

Unfortunately, Frankie struggled with the replacement engine (it lost oil pressure) and he gained no points at all on Saturday night. After about 4 hours sleep he set up his tarmac car for the final race at Belle Vue on Sunday.

Never mind, Frankie - we all know the silver roof is only on loan to the Smiths this year, and you will win it back again next year!

Danny has a great night at Brum

Danny Wainman had a great night at Brum on Saturday, winning a heat and the Grand National!  Way to go, Danny!

Danny didn't qualify for the World Final but will be competing in the Consolation Final on Saturday, so he may yet make it into the World Final (paws crossed)!  Go, Danny, Go!

Frankie wins his semi-final and the toss for pole position!

At Birmingham on the 22nd of August, Frankie won his semi-final and then won the toss for pole position, so we now know the main grid for the World Final at Kings Lynn on the 19th of September!  Frankie and Andy are on the front row, with Andy defending his world title.  We are nervous little bears, keeping our paws crossed for Frankie, and poor Bev will be a bundle of nerves until it is all over.

GO, FRANKIE, GO!  FRANKIE FOR THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!

Euro weekend, rain, more rain and the bivvy

Last weekend we all went to the European Championship at Northampton.  On Saturday afternoon, Paul put the bivvy up but apart from a light shower it really wasn't necessary.  However, Sunday was a totally different story - by 9am on Sunday morning the rain was bouncing off the race track, but Bev and Paul were snug in their bivvy, receiving envious comments from people sitting in their waterproofs with rain pouring off their umbrellas!  One man said he laughed when he saw us putting up the bivvy on Saturday evening, but he changed his mind on Sunday when he had to sit for hours in the pouring rain while we were relaxing in the bivvy drinking cider and keeping very dry.

Anyway, enough of the weather, what about the racing?  Well, despite the awful conditions, the racing was excellent and both the F1s and F2s entertained us on Saturday evening and all day Sunday.  Gordon Moodie won the F2 European Championship, while Lee Fairhurst won the F1 European Championship in his first season of racing - excellent stuff!  Frankie managed to put Andy Smith into the fence, but then experienced mechanical problems and had to pull off before the end of the race.  But Frankie raced really well both days, clocking up 2 heat wins and 2nd in the final, and had a special presentation made to him because he has been the National Points champion for 14 consecutive years, which is a new record.

So, all in all, a great weekend for us, a soggy weekend for most other spectators and the drivers!  A BIG thank you from us bears to everyone who braved the elements to bring us such a great weekend's entertainment - that includes the drivers, mechanics, their families, the track staff and other officials!

Racing at Kings Lynn

The racing at Kings Lynn was excellent last night, despite a poor turnout of spectators and drivers.  It was a beautiful day and evening, with temperatures soaring to 25C, so no bivvy or thermals were required by us bears.  What a contrast with recent evenings at the racing where we have shivvered, despite our own fur coats and layers of clothing!

Anyway, was the racing good?  Did Frankie win?  Were there any accidents?  Ok, your cub reporter, Hamish, will reveal all.

The racing was excellent with few serious accidents, so it was an evening of fast and furious racing.  Because the weather was so hot and dry, the shale track had to be watered regularly or it turned into a sandstorm, with drivers and spectators unable to see what was going on.  This meant the racing was slow at the start of each race as the track was slippy, but the racing speeded up as the track dried out.

Frankie was spun out in his first race, but he continued racing with a flat tyre, though he didn't manage to finish in the top ten places.  He did better in his next heat, when he came in 3rd.  The final was fast and furious, with Frankie appearing to get caught up with the other red tops but he was suddenly third, then 2nd and chasing 97 (Murray Harrison) for first position.  Frankie rapidly closed the gap between them with 2 laps to go and he hit Murray on the last bend to take the final by a cat's whisker!  Yipee!  Way to go, Frankie!

The Grand National was another great race, with Frankie coming in 4th - he didn't take the option of starting a lap down to get double points as there were very few cars in the Grand National.

It was a great evening's racing, with 2-litre saloon stock cars racing as well.  Bev and Paul got VERY dirty indeed, with grubby faces and matted hair - they both looked as though they had been racing, not just spectating!

Lively racing at Northampton

We went to Northampton on Saturday evening and had a fun time watching some very entertaining racing.  Frankie didn't have a great evening, though he raced really well - he seemed to spend most of the evening chasing the Smith brothers or being chased by them, which made for some really good racing.

There was some rufty-tufty racing, with poor Tony Smith being involved in a rather nasty-looking accident and being taken off the track in an ambulance.  However he is ok, and despite rumours to the contrary, his car is not a write-off though it will require a substantial amount of work to repair it.  As Frankie says, "it's all repairable"!  Get well soon, Tony!

Well done, Frankie!

We didn't go to the racing at Skegness at the weekend, but when Bev checked the results she discovered that Frankie had won the UK Open on Sunday!  Yipee!  So far this season, Frankie has won 7 heats and 5 finals, with his arch rival Andy Smith having clocked up 5 heats and 3 finals.

Way to go, Frankie!

Suspicious-looking parcel

The postman delivered a suspicious-looking parcel this morning, but when Bev opened it up there was a DVD of the 2009 NZ Superstock Team Champs, with the tagline of "we're no pussies!"  That's an understatement - this is over an hour of rufty-tufty racing, with serious crashes, fires, and plenty of full-contact racing, with Bev's hero, Frankie Wainman Junior squaring up to the NZ drivers and doing very well indeed!  Bev has had fun today watching it on her computer and cheering on Frankie and the other UK drivers - Tom Harris, Stuart Smith Jnr and Mark Taylor.

Team GB came in third overall, with Frankie winning the 240's World Championship - yipee!

So, where did the parcel come from?  Well, New Zealand obviously, but who sent it to Bev?  We examined the parcel carefully and we are sure that the name and address is in Paul's distinctive handwriting.  We will quiz him when he gets home and all will be revealed...

Pinch, punch, first of the month, no return rabbit...........

Yes, it's the 1st of May, and what a horrid April we have had!  Bev lost her job, the weather was wet and cold, and Frankie struggled with his tarmac car, eventually blowing his rocker (we've done that too, and it's not a pretty sight!).

But hopefully May will be an improvement on April.  Frankie didn't win the final on Saturday at Coventry, though he made up for it by winning both finals on holiday Monday (Sheffield and Belle Vue).  Bev isn't sorry about losing her job as she hated it anyway and she has an interview for a proper job on Wednesday.
Oh, and the weather finally seems to be warming up, at last!

Sunday, April 19, 2009

Oh no!

Oh no, poor Frankie blew his rocker at Buxton and couldn't race at all, so his arch rival Andy Smith won the final in his new tarmac car :-(  Hope you can fix your rocker for the next tarmac race meeting, Frankie!
