The racing at Kings Lynn was excellent last night, despite a poor turnout of spectators and drivers. It was a beautiful day and evening, with temperatures soaring to 25C, so no bivvy or thermals were required by us bears. What a contrast with recent evenings at the racing where we have shivvered, despite our own fur coats and layers of clothing!
Anyway, was the racing good? Did Frankie win? Were there any accidents? Ok, your cub reporter, Hamish, will reveal all.
The racing was excellent with few serious accidents, so it was an evening of fast and furious racing. Because the weather was so hot and dry, the shale track had to be watered regularly or it turned into a sandstorm, with drivers and spectators unable to see what was going on. This meant the racing was slow at the start of each race as the track was slippy, but the racing speeded up as the track dried out.
Frankie was spun out in his first race, but he continued racing with a flat tyre, though he didn't manage to finish in the top ten places. He did better in his next heat, when he came in 3rd. The final was fast and furious, with Frankie appearing to get caught up with the other red tops but he was suddenly third, then 2nd and chasing 97 (Murray Harrison) for first position. Frankie rapidly closed the gap between them with 2 laps to go and he hit Murray on the last bend to take the final by a cat's whisker! Yipee! Way to go, Frankie!
The Grand National was another great race, with Frankie coming in 4th - he didn't take the option of starting a lap down to get double points as there were very few cars in the Grand National.
It was a great evening's racing, with 2-litre saloon stock cars racing as well. Bev and Paul got VERY dirty indeed, with grubby faces and matted hair - they both looked as though they had been racing, not just spectating!
