Well, we met up with Ruth and Clive to have a final meal at the Vecchia Trattoria, and Jack didn't disappoint - either with the food, drink or entertainment. The food was absolutely scrummy, and Bev had probably the best spaghetti carbonara ever made! Unfortunately, she couldn't finish it all, and the plate was whipped from the table before she could remember to ask for a "doggie bag" to bring home to us hungry bears!
Poor Ruth and Clive got held up in traffic, so arrived a little late, which was all the excuse Jack needed to insult them most of the evening :-) He asked if they wanted to skip straight to the coffees to save time, and when Clive ordered his food in impeccable Italian, he told him that his French was "passable"! It was a lovely evening with great company and yummy food, topped off with coffees, desserts and free liqueurs!
So long Jack - we will miss you, your delicious food and your wonderful sense of humour! And so long to all Jack's family and staff who have served us over the years - we will miss you all.

Vecchia Trattoria - Sad News
On Saturday Bev took Paul to the Vecchia Trattoria for his birthday meal, and we bears tagged along too as we love the food there. The pasta was delicious, the wine was very palatable, and the entertainment factor was high as Jack bantered with the customers. However, the evening was tinged with sadness when we discovered that they are closing in 4-weeks' time :-( Yes, Jack is finally hanging up his pinny and moving on, so the Vecchia Trattoria will be no more (sob sob!).
Actually, he and his family are not moving very far - they are moving into the old Threshers' shop across the road, which will be a wine bar with fresh, cheap and cheerful pasta dishes, paninis, salads, etc. It sounds lovely but not the place for a special meal.
And what is happening to the restaurant? It has being turned into a Thai Restaurant, and since Thai food gives us bears exploding trousers and Paul chronic indigestion, I guess we won't be frequenting the new establishment any time soon!
Hopefully we can find a new Italian restaurant with yummy food and friendly staff. Our favourite memories of Jack are:

- picking up a woman's fake fur coat and asking if it had a name
- a woman in a coat asking Jack to put the air condiition on, and Jack telling her to take her coat off if she was too hot!
- Jack throwing out a couple who wanted to smoke in his restaurant! Even when they changed their minds he wouldn't let them back in.
- Jack refusing to serve a group of people who turned up 30 minutes late!
- Jack spotting a customer arriving before his table was ready, so Jack moved the hands of the clock back and then told the customer he was early. The customer even apologised for being so early!
- A woman complaining that they had been waiting for their starter for a while, and Jack shouting into the kitchen, "Do we serve fast food here?" Someone shouted back "No!" and Jack just shrugged.
- Jack agreeing to serve a group of 8 people who hadn't booked, then when they sat down he said he hoped they were big spenders
- A man asking what the specials were, and Jack saying that he was keen to get rid of a swordfish that had been in the freezer for 7 or 8 years!
- a group of people trying to order the food by the numbers in the menu, and Jack shouting at them that it wasn't a Chinese take-away!

Bev's Birthday
It was Bev's birthday a couple of days ago, and she had a very nice time indeed. We don't know exactly how old she is, but we suspect that you would need a lot more than two paws to count the number of years!
Anyway, she got lots of nice presents. Her best present is her massive iPod from Paul, who also got her a lovely pen that contains a black pen, red pen and propelling pencil. Excellent! Added to those lovely presents, she got lots of birthday cards, a CD, a Harry Potter DVD, a Jeremy Clarkson book and lots of chocolates. What a lucky girl she is!
And to top it all, they had a lovely meal at the Vecchia Trattoria. Bev had Linguine Carbonara, which she says is possibly the best Carbonara she has ever tasted, and Paul had the Tagliatelle Ragu which he thoroughly enjoyed. They finished that off with Panna Cottas, coffee and liqueurs.
As they didn't take us yet again, we phoned Jack and ordered our food - we put it on Paul's bill but got it delivered direct to the house. We ate tons of yummy pasta, and despite having no opposable thumbs, we didn't make too much of a mess! An excellent meal was had by all, and 10 out of 10 to the Vecchia Trattoria for excellent food and drink!

Two exciting weekends in the pipeline!
Well, our humans have organised two rather exciting weekends between now and the end of the month - yipee!
This weekend involves a scrummy visit to our favourite restaurant - the Vecchia Trattoria in Baldock - with Bev, Paul and friends. So a large table for 4 humans and 7 bears, please!
For the following weekend, Bev has persuaded Paul that they NEED to go to Buxton to support Frankie in his semi-final, and he has agreed. Mind you, she would probably have gone to Buxton anyway if he had said "no" and she would have taken us bears with her for company. Anyway, Paul is coming with us, and weather permitting, it should be an excellent Sunday sitting in the rain or sun, drinking cider and cheering on Frankie. Go, Frankie, Go!

Vecchia Trattoria
The meal last night at the Vecchia Trattoria in Baldock was utterly scrummy, and we bears had a lovely dinner there too. The banter from the owner was first class, as usual, so it was a perfect night out! We cannot recommend it highly enough - if you love good Italian food and excellent banter check it out at http://www.vecchiatrattoria.com/

Vecchia Trattoria in Baldock
The two kidults had a meal in the Vecchia Trattoria last night to celebrate Paul's forthcoming birthday. They didn't take us (Hamish, Bill and Bruno) along because they are too embarrassed to have 3 stuffed bears sitting at the table with them - from everything you have read on this blog, can you imagine our two kidults being embarrassed by anything? Actually, it's usually the other way around - they embarrass us!
Anyway, the food and running commentary from the host was up to it's usual high standard, and we would highly recommend it to anyone wanting utterly scrummy Italian food. But, next time, include us bears in the booking, pleeeeeeeese!
