Euro weekend, rain, more rain and the bivvy

Last weekend we all went to the European Championship at Northampton.  On Saturday afternoon, Paul put the bivvy up but apart from a light shower it really wasn't necessary.  However, Sunday was a totally different story - by 9am on Sunday morning the rain was bouncing off the race track, but Bev and Paul were snug in their bivvy, receiving envious comments from people sitting in their waterproofs with rain pouring off their umbrellas!  One man said he laughed when he saw us putting up the bivvy on Saturday evening, but he changed his mind on Sunday when he had to sit for hours in the pouring rain while we were relaxing in the bivvy drinking cider and keeping very dry.

Anyway, enough of the weather, what about the racing?  Well, despite the awful conditions, the racing was excellent and both the F1s and F2s entertained us on Saturday evening and all day Sunday.  Gordon Moodie won the F2 European Championship, while Lee Fairhurst won the F1 European Championship in his first season of racing - excellent stuff!  Frankie managed to put Andy Smith into the fence, but then experienced mechanical problems and had to pull off before the end of the race.  But Frankie raced really well both days, clocking up 2 heat wins and 2nd in the final, and had a special presentation made to him because he has been the National Points champion for 14 consecutive years, which is a new record.

So, all in all, a great weekend for us, a soggy weekend for most other spectators and the drivers!  A BIG thank you from us bears to everyone who braved the elements to bring us such a great weekend's entertainment - that includes the drivers, mechanics, their families, the track staff and other officials!
