We all went to Kings Lynn yesterday to find out who was going to be the National Series Champion. This is a championship run throughout the year and the driver with the most points by the end of yesterday wins the championship and gets to drive with a silver roof the following year. So, going into yesterday's race meeting, Frankie was 14 points ahead of Andy, but with 2 heats, a consolation race, final and grand national all with double points on offer, both drivers had a chance of winning. So, did Frankie win, or did Andy win? Hamish, your cub reporter, will reveal all.....
After the heats and final meeting, with Andy coming 4th in his heat and winning the final, and Frankie coming 3rd in his heat and 3rd in the final, Frankie was still 2 points ahead. Having won the final, Andy chose to start a lap down, so that a top 10 position in the race would give him quadruple points.
By this stage, Bev was feeling sick and could hardly watch the race. Frankie finished 5th and Andy finished 11th. Sure that Andy had won, Bev shot off to the loo to hide her disappointment, from where she heard lots of cheers and a driver doing donuts. Imagine her surprise when she emerged from the toilet to find that Frankie had won, by 1 position! If Andy had come in 10th, he would have won.
Needless to say, Bev was delighted with the result! And the victory was all the sweeter after Frankie's terrible accident earlier in the year.
So, next weekend is the Frankie Wainman Senior testamonial at Sheffield. Bev and Paul will be there cheering on all the Wainmans - all three Wainmans will race together for the one and only time before Frankie Senior retires and Daniel starts racing next year. After the racing there will be a BIG party!
Roll on next weekend - we bears will be wearing our Frankie t-shirts while Phoebe will be wearing her Frankie thong, and we will be ready to party!
