Hi, Hamish MacBear, cub reporter here, with some updates on this weekend's thrilling racing. Starting with Saturday night at Ipwich, which was the BSCDA British Drivers' Championship - this had 6 heats plus the final championship race. Andy won both his heats, but pulled off with a puncture in the 3rd heat, while Frankie came 5th and 2nd in his heats and pulled off with a puncture in the 3rd heat. Oh dear, it wasn't looking good for Frankie in the final, as Andy definitely appeared to have the fastest car, and Bev was anxious, depressed and too scared to watch in case Frankie got knocked out!
Anyway, in the final, the drivers were lined up based on points gained that evening - Andy and Stuart were in row 2 and Frankie was in row 9. There was a massive pile-up on the bottom bend around lap 5, which Frankie managed to avoid, so by this stage we had Nick Smith (no relation to Andy or Stuart) in 1st position, followed in order by Stuart Smith, Andy Smith and Frankie. On the restart, Nick Smith lost control on the bend as he was pursued by Stuart, and Nick's car went into a violent spin, hitting Frankie's car very hard and ripping Nick Smith's rear axle from his car! Any sane person would have slowed down, but Frankie just put his foot to the floor, and while didn't appear to sustain any serious damage, he lost some speed. However, the yellow flags came out as Nick Smith was in trouble, so Frankie was up behind Andy again. On this restart, Frankie was glued to the back of Andy's car, and he pushed him hard in the first corner, overtaking Andy and shot off in hot pursuit of Stuart, with Andy chasing hard behind. The crowd were delighted with the sheer quality of the racing, and were cheering for their favourite drivers. Frankie slowly reeled Stuart in and overtook him, and then it looked as though Andy was going to overtake Stuart, but Andy hit the wall, got a puncture and pulled off. Frankie kept a good distance between himself and Stuart, and took the chequered flag to a delighted Bev - she was dancing with delight and cheered Frankie when he came round for his victory lap. The driving was sheer class from Frankie - he might not have had the fastest car, but he proved that you should never underestimate him!
Frankie has now won the British Drivers' Championship 7 times, and has beaten all the previous records set by John Lund and Andy's dad.
We all went to bed happy little bears - Frankie is such a star!
