Did Frankie win the World Final? Did he fight his way past 33 cars to take the chequered flag? Or did Andy Smith win from the front of the pack?
Ok, the grid of cars was made up of star drivers from Holland, New Zealand and the UK, with Andy Smith at the front along with John Lund. As you may remember, Frankie started at the back because he failed to qualify in his semi final. Well, the race was fast and furious, with Andy Smith taking an early lead and Frankie working his way through the pack from the back. John Lund was pushed aside and before we knew it, Andy Smith had taken the chequered flag, with Frankie 2nd and Stuart Smith Junior (Andy's brother) 3rd! Frankie might not have won, but everyone was stunned that he made it to 2nd from the back without the aid of any race stoppages to close the gap. He truly was the driver of the night, and then went on to win the Coventry World Open, waving to the crowd as he came round to take the chequered flag!
Daniel Wainman (Frankie's little brother) was also defending his World Title on Saturday night. This was a rufty-tufty display of racing from the 10 - 16 year olds, with Daniel coming in second, just like his brother!
What a brilliant night's racing, and we bears managed to see it all without any big people standing in front of us. Bill - that's because you bit their ankles and made them move, Hamish!
And then it was the World Masters at Northampton on Sunday, with us all sitting out in the sun drinking cider and watching the racing - bliss! So, did Frankie win the World Masters, or did the new World Champion win it? Well, neither actually - one of the young guns, Matt Newson, took the chequered flag with Frankie in hot pursuit in 2nd position and Andy in 4th.
What a brilliant weekend's racing! Andy won the gold roof, but Frankie proved he is the best driver! And to top it all, Bev bought herself a very smart Frankie jacket, with an embroidered logo of his car with gold roof. He may be back to his silver roof at the moment, but we know he'll be the gold roof again in 2007!
